So, what’s in a name?

Is it wrong not to tell? Why do I feel so guilty every time someone asks us that question of “do you have a name”? Our response has always been “we do, but we’re keeping it a secret”. Now, come to think of it, we have not been entirely truthful on the “having a name” thing. We have had the first name for quite some time now but we actually have been struggling on the middle name… well, Sara has at least. I, on the other hand, was not stressing. Although I am interested in (actually vested in, but more on that later) a middle name, I was not so hard-pressed to find something so urgently. What I failed to realize was that Sara’s earnest need for closure in that chapter in here nesting prep and my complacency did not necessarily jive.

So after being backed into the metaphorical corner, I perused the list of name candidates posted on the refrigerator, mulled them over, and presented her with my choice on Friday evening on our way down to Long Island for the weekend. She now has closure, and my take-away… listen to the woman.

And no, we’re still not telling…

  1. No, it's not wrong. We didn't tell people, and we had two names to keep a secret! When you tell people the name you pick before Willis is born, you have to hear all of their opinions (Which? Choosing a name for someone is hard enough and also, it's not their child.) If you wait and tell people when you're introducing your child to them, it's now a baby and they're too wrapped up in cute adorableness to criticize. We shared our girl names after the boys were born and people *still* complained about them, even though we weren't using them!

  2. I guess that you just can't win. We're holding onto our boy name for now... I don't know at what point we'll vive it up but I did have an ominous premonition on Sunday while cruising thru BR'U that I wasn't going to get my little boy. BTW, there will be no "Willis" or "Willomena"

  3. That's good, I would feel dreadful if Willis was actually ever in the running! And for what it's worth, we chose a completely different girl's name the second time around. Perhaps that's not the norm.

  4. I still think you need to find a way to work "Erbsen" -- or some derivative of it -- into the mix... Just my two cents.
